They apologized for the theft of personal information from millions of users of the company’s online services. Hackers targeted Sony’s PlayStation Network, Sony Online Entertainment and Qriocity music systems. In all, Sony says information may have been stolen from more than one hundred million accounts. The data includes information like names, addresses, phone numbers and birthdates. In some cases, even credit and debit card numbers may have been stolen. The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into the cyber attacks. Sony shut down its PlayStation Network on April twentieth. The company is being criticized for not telling its users about the stolen information until a week later. Sony has also been criticized for not making its accounts more secure by encrypting the data. Sony officials say they have now taken steps to improve security. Peter Warren is chairman of the Cyber Security Research Institute in London. His group studies technology crimes and their effects on our computer-dependent world. Mr. Warren points out that what happened at Sony is not rare: “We’ve seen a number of very large companies that have suffered some tremendously embarrassing losses of data.”The problem, he says, is that there is far more interest in developing technology than in keeping it safe. Install Windows 98 Second Edition (ideally) as a virtual machine (you need to have the media, this is NOT free). I gave my virtual machine 128 MB of RAM, which is a pretty good amount for Windows 98. 3. Install DirectX 7+ or higher (I used DirectX 8.1, which I got from www.fileplanet.com 4. ABSTRACT It can be painfully difficult to take software that runs on one person’s machine and get it to run on another machine. Online forums and mailing lists are filled with discussions of users’ troubles with compiling, installing, and configuring software and their myriad of dependencies. To eliminate this dependency problem, we created a tool called CDE that uses system call interposition to monitor the execution of x86-Linux programs and package up the Code, Data, and Environment required to run them on other x86-Linux machines, without any installation or configuration. CDE is easy to use: Simply prepend any Linux command (or series of commands) with ‘cde’, and CDE will execute that command, monitor its actions using ptrace, and copy all files it accesses (eg, executables, libraries, plug-ins, scripts, configuration/data files) into a self-contained package. Now you can transfer that package to another Linux machine and run that exact same command without installing anything. In short, if you can run a set of Linux commands on your x86 machine, then CDE enables others to run it on theirs. People in both academia and industry have used CDE to distribute portable software, demo research prototypes, make their scientific experiments reproducible, run software natively on older Linux distros, and quickly deploy experiments to compute clusters. Quick solution on the reoccurring Vista issue with the CD/DVD Drive not working and not opening or reading discs. You know you have this problem if your CD/DVD Drive is not showing up in My Compuer or your discs that you put in the drive are not being recognized.
