The following reasons should silence the nay-sayer and help them heed the wisdom from Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach, “Teachers will not be replaced by technology, but teachers who don’t use technology will be replaced by those who do.”. Teachers are finding that using different classroom technologies like tablet computers, digital video, iPods, and video games are great tools for helping students learn. 1. Students love it. Students love using new technologies in the classroom. Whether it be the “cool” factor or just a genuine interest in new technology, it allows teachers to vary activities of the day and engage students. There is no commandment for education that says, “THOU SHALT NOT HAVE FUN” Students spend hours using technology like computers and television when they get home from school–why not engage them through their favorite mediums? 2. It engages the Four Key Components to Learning. Click on the link to read how technology in education (specifically the iPod School Listening Center) engages the 4 key components to learning. 3. Professional Development. Using new technologies allow students to learn another skill set that will help …

Thanks to some great people who posted about my other video, apparently there is something called Overdrive on many Asus monitors. This seems to cause issues using *some* video cards in the form of ghosting, which Overdrive is suppose to help reduce. This fix may work on other Asus monitors as well. If you don’t have a ghosting problem when scrolling windows or moving them around, DON’T bother with this fix. You want Overdrive on if you don’t have ghosting issues. 1. Power off monitor. 2. Hold down Menu Button + Power for 7 seconds. Then let off for a few seconds and hold down the Menu Button until you see the special/hidden blue menu on the far left of the monitor. 3. Use the normal up/down navigation keys to get to OD, then turn that off and exit the menu.

This is the VOA Special English Technology Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Sony officials held a news conference in early May in Tokyo. They apologized for the theft of personal information from millions of users of the company’s online services. Hackers targeted Sony’s PlayStation Network, Sony Online Entertainment and Qriocity music systems. In all, Sony says information may have been stolen from more than one hundred million accounts. The data includes information like names, addresses, phone numbers and birthdates. In some cases, even credit and debit card numbers may have been stolen. The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into the cyber attacks. Sony shut down its PlayStation Network on April twentieth. The company is being criticized for not telling its users about the stolen information until a week later. Sony has also been criticized for not making its accounts more secure by encrypting the data. Sony officials say they have now taken steps to improve security. Peter Warren is chairman of the Cyber Security Research Institute in London. His group studies technology crimes and their effects on our computer-dependent world. Mr. Warren points out that what happened at Sony is not rare: “We’ve seen a number of very large companies that have suffered some tremendously embarrassing losses of data.”The problem, he says, is that there is far more interest in developing technology than in keeping it safe. As he puts it: “Lots and lots of …

This is the VOA Special English Technology Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Using a computer mouse or trackball can be a little tricky. You choose the object you want and move it to where you want it, only to have it end up in a different position. This happens to all of us sometimes, and we think little of it. But for people who have a difficult time controlling their movements, this little navigational issue can be a really big problem. Now, researchers at the University of Washington have developed new cursors that make activating objects easier for people with motor disabilities. Jacob Wobbrock is an assistant professor at the University of Washington. He leads the AIM Research Group that developed the cursors. Professor Wobbrock says mouse cursor operations are complex processes that assume things about computer users. He says, “For many people who have poor dexterity, the inability to control their fingers well, maybe pain in their wrists or hand, maybe arthritis — those assumptions of the average user, they don’t hold.” The AIM Research Group has developed two cursors. One is called the Pointing Magnifier. Professor Wobbrock says it uses a large circular cursor instead of the traditional arrow pointer. Users can make the circle as big as they like. When the circle is positioned over the target, everything in the circle appears larger, almost filling the whole screen. This makes it easier for the user to click on the object. Inside that magnified view, the …
