by Guus Sliepen Rather than configuring tunnels, a tinc VPN is more or less specified by its endpoints. The tinc daemons will automatically set up tunnels in order to create a full mesh network. The problem in today’s Internet is that many users are trapped behind NAT, and ISPs are known to drop ICMP packets, IP fragments, and/or UDP packets, making reliable connections between peers difficult. Another problem is how to manage authentication and authorization in a fully decentralized, but user-friendly way. In this talk I will look at solutions already implemented in tinc and other VPN software, and I look at future work to solve the remaining problems. tinc is a Virtual Private Network (VPN) daemon that automatically tries to create a full mesh network between peers. It can route IPv4 and IPv6 packets, or switch any type of Ethernet packet to create a virtual LAN. It can tunnel over IPv4 and IPv6, and runs on Linux, *BSD, Solaris, MacOS/X and Windows. Sony Corp. was trying to determine Monday whether users’ credit card numbers or other personal information had been compromised as the outage of its global PlayStation Network entered a sixth day, PC World reported. The company confirmed that an “external intrusion” by hackers disrupted the service, affecting more than 75 million users worldwide who use it to play video games against friends online, stream movies and shop online. Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka said the company was conducting a “thorough investigation” into the outage, which began April 20. He said Sony did not yet know if users’ credit card information or other personal information had been compromised in the attack, but the company would immediately inform users if it had. A posting on the official PlayStation blog Monday by Patrick Seybold, Sony senior director of corporate communications and social media, gave no indication when PlayStation Network service might return.Playstation network hacked and down! ABSTRACT VOIP and teleconferencing often perform much more poorly on today’s Internet than the Internet of a decade ago, despite great gains in bandwidth. Lots of fiber, cheap memory, smart hardware, variability of wireless thoughput, changes in web browser behaviour, changes in TCP implementations, and a focus on benchmarking Internet performance solely by bandwidth, and engineer’s natural reluctance to drop packets have conspired to encourage papering over problems by adding buffers; each of which may introduce latency when filled. Buffering mistakes have been made in all technologies: operating systems, home routers both wired and wireless, broadband equipment, corporate networks, 3G networks and parts of the core Internet itself. The mistaken quest to never drop packets has destroyed interactivity under load, and often results in actual higher packet loss, as TCP’s congestion avoidance algorithms have been defeated by these buffers. The lessons of the “RED manifesto” of 1997 have been forgotten or never learned by a new generation of engineers. Full solutions require careful queue management, and that management should be everywhere; we no longer have the luxury to think that this is a problem solely of Internet routers.
